Some people choose to skip the saving part and decide to travel at the expense of others, begging for money along the way.
Everyone loves traveling to exciting new places – although it can get quite expensive. That’s why we often spend months and even years saving up for our dream holidays. However, some people choose to skip the saving part and decide to travel at the expense of others, begging for money along the way. A term “begpacking” was born to describe this unethical behavior of some people and it turns out they are a real problem in some Southeast Asian countries.
The Indonesian island of Bali got so fed up with the huge number of western “begpackers” on the streets, immigration officers started sending them to their embassies to sort out their problems. One Indonesian immigration officer said that it’s mostly Australians, the British or Russians begging on the streets. “We tend to report these cases to the relevant embassies so that they can oversee their citizens who are on holiday,” says the officer. Even though people are beginning to report these western “begpackers” to the police, there are still many out there blatantly begging for money instead of working for it.
